Kindergarten Registration
We are in the process of planning our organization for September 2012.  We are a Phase 2 School for Full Day Early Learning Kindergarten Program (attendance is full day, every day). If you have a child born in 2007, and you live in the Winston Churchill School boundary area, he/she is eligible to attend Senior Kindergarten in September 2012.  Also, if you have a child born in 2008, and you live in the Winston Churchill School boundary area, he/she is eligible to attend Junior Kindergarten in September 2012.

If you do not reside within the Winston Churchill School boundary area, you must register at your home school.

Please note:  If your child has already attended Junior Kindergarten at Winston Churchill School, he/she will not need to re-register for Senior Kindergarten.

If you know of someone living in the Winston Churchill School area who has a child born in 2007 or 2008 and who did not receive this letter, please have them call the school at 519 884-3722.

Please call the school to set up an appointment for Registration which will be held during the afternoon of Tuesday, January 31, 2012 and during the morning of Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

Library News

Our Silver Birch reading programs will be starting in the new year.  This year the Grade 3 and 4 students will be invited to participate in the Silver Birch Express program which includes 10 quicker reads, while the older students will be involved with the regular Silver Birch program.  In these programs our students have the opportunity to read some great Canadian literature and then vote for their favourite book in April. To be eligible to vote, students must read between five and ten books from their chosen category of fiction, non-fiction or express.  This is an exciting opportunity for our students because their votes will be combined with the votes of children from other Ontario schools so that a winner can be chosen and announced in Toronto in early May.

The Blue Spruce reading program will also be starting in the new year.  The primary teachers will read ten picture books to their classes and the children will have a chance to vote for their favourite book.  These votes will also be combined with those from other Ontario schools and a winning book will be announced in Toronto.

It’s always interesting to see if our votes match the votes of other Ontario students.  Thanks to our Parent Council for purchasing the books for both of these programs, which will become part of our library collection when the programs are complete.

We are planning a Scholastic Book Fair in the spring.  The evening event will coincide with the Science Fair on Thursday, March 29.  All proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase new resources for our school library.

Don’t forget about all of the wonderful parent resources that are available for loan from our library.  There are books that deal with homework completion, bullying, and other relevant parenting issues.

These resources are shelved in the Parent Resource section of our library and may be signed out using your child’s account.  Just drop by or call the library at 519-884-3722.

          Family Literacy Day
ABC Life Literacy Canada: "Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. More than 1.5 million Canadians have already participated in the initiative since its debut. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development. Even just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well".
Please see the link below for information on Family Literacy Day Activites in Waterloo for this year on Sunday, January 30, 2012.
